I'm not sure if this would help, I have used it to replace critical operating system files that were corrupted. It looks at the installed version and compairs it to the original version and replaces it if there is a difference. My computer (a Dell) has a partition with the original files. If yours doesn't, then you will need your WinXP install disk.
You have to use the Command Prompt - it's in Accessories
Just type sfc /scannow and Enter
There is a space after the sfc
