I don't know how old you are but when I was a kid we had 3 network stations, ABC, CBS, NBC, 1 PBS station and 2 independent station. Yes that's 6 stations.
The networks showed the network fare. On Weekends it was nothing but sports, fishing shows etc. Boring as hell for a little kid.
PBS. Forget about it.
The independent stations.
1 showed nothing but old tv show reruns and the weekends they filled it with westerns.
The other not much better, and on weekends if you liked Lawrence Welk or Hee Haw you would be one happy little camper.
Now days I flip on the channel and I can see high quality television covering almost any subject I would be interested in.
Look at all of the educational channel that make PBS almost obsolete. TLC, Discovery, The History Channel, all of their sister channels like Times Discovery which shows excellent documentaries all day long.
You even have movie channels broken down into niches...LOL.
Westerns, Black, classic, mystery, love...My God there's plenty of stuff to watch.
Sure if you want to talk about specific network tv shows. The problem is there's so much to watch some of the quality stuff gets lost in the noise. Shows like Arrested Development.
Anyway be glad you have your interwebs and your cable tv...LOL It could be worse. We could still be drawing stick figures on cave walls.

Now, there is a perspective I hadn't considered....don't know much about television. I wasn't allowed to watch it.....
But you do bring up good points...we do have more choices than ever before and we've got high def....the cup is half full, after all!
