Not so long ago, having a skin was seen as something radical and "special". Not so much anymore. The only skins that stick out in my mind are the old Epic Cash one where pimpdog was allowed back and the more recent Rage Cash one.
So, marketing-wise, I guess you could look at what remains "top-of-mind" and conclude that a skin has to be accompanied by a concentrated or innovative marketing effort rather than just the change of colors and a couple of posts on a board.
