When I was in school, I learned to function with little to no sleep...very grueling and very demanding...none of us were very healthy, as a result...and I truly believe our mental acuity decreased with sleep deprivation.

I don't do that anymore. I find that I'm much fresher and more alert when I have regular sleeping patterns that fit in with my circadian rhythms.
