Car alarms are a much different scenario than house alarms. The vast majority of burglaries are opportunistic in nature. Most burglars will pass on a house for an easier target if they know that house has an alarm.

Regarding the killing, Im just saying that an alarm system isn't that much help.
Most alarms aren't noticeable, the company usually throws a sticker on a window/lawn to notify passers by that the house has an alarm. So then just throw a sticker on your window or put a sign on your lawn to notify those oppotunistic burglars that your house may not be an easy target.
