Many (if not most) Iranians that have immigrated to the U.S. and other countries were fleeing the changes taking place in Iran. The U.S. doesn't admit many pro-Iran immigrants, while they welcome anti-Iran dissidents (the CIA and other government agencies like to recruit them as well).
In an effort to demonstrate their rejection of the current government in their former homeland, they refer to themselves (and teach their children to refer to themselves) as Persian.
Doubt me? What percentage of Cubans or Vietnamese people in America are pro-Castro or pro-Vietnam compared to the percentage that are anti-Castro or anti-Vietnam (or indifferent - such animosities fade as people become assimilated)?
