To a certain degree, yes, if you talk about the little soldier. It was simpler as a soldier that time, they had to follow orders. March or die, and that was it. Today, eyes are watching aka media, and even one soldiers behaviour can turn things into some big political. And when you come back today, you are not a hero, only a puppet... a political tool.
But overall, there were many overall political factors during WWII that affected both the strategy and even the morality among the soldiers. The race to Berlin and the negotiations between Japan and Russia are two examples.
