They wanted Alaska. Hawaii was a strategic military postion towards that objective.
It was a pre-emptive assault. The very nature of that doctrine is to catch the target off guard.
Back then we didn't have the greatest technology to alert us well in advance.
At the same time we didn't have nuclear powered ships that could aimlessly cruise around refueling once every 20 years.
Yes- I think we could of been better prepared. We were probably pre-occupied with the European Theatre
