There was a company promoting their finger scanning device for the home that measured bone density or something. The downside was that some young adults would be flagged as minors. Not to mention people would need to buy this thing.
There is also issuing security cards to certain people (verified adults in this case), then they swipe it through a USB terminal for access. I don't know the companies who make these either. Again though, people would need to purchase a physical device. Plus you have no idea if a minor is actually using the card.
Another issue with these physical verification devices is that they present a problem for a society that is moving towards smaller internet capable electronics. While they may work at your desk with your other bulky hardware, their use is not realistic with things like the inevitable WiFi capable iPod or other very small devices that people carry on their body.
