Actually I studied defense and strategy a bit in college.
The big case we looked at was the Cuban Missile Crisis.
A few things we didn't know at the time of the crisis, and even for decades after:
Cuba had control over the THEATRE (short range) nukes. It was a short fuse.
The Russians were prepared for war and had nukes on their ships. If we had attacked their ships, it would have been a war. Another short fuse.
It's a very good thing JFK and his brain trust made the right moves!
