There's plenty more you could add and a few years to go yet.
Sadly you are correct aico. Nobody can turn up trump cards all the time and I've deliberately tried to find *anything* that could remotely be described as "half-successful" and it's not easy. It would be nice to have *some* faith left.
I had no "opinion" one way or other on Bush prior to the Florida chad count - apart from he fucked up the economics and other stuff in Texas and this seemed to be claimed as a "success".
The very first time red lights started flashing was watching some TV news about 10 days after he entered the Whitehouse. In a brief statement lasting under one minute George reversed a substantial amount of the pledges he made to get elected.
There were about a dozen folks in the room at the time and nobody was really listening to George - but the place went silent and I remember people looking at each other stunned that anyone could have the balls to tell an elecorate "how its' not going to be" after having promised "how it is going to be" ten days earlier. It was obvious the US was gonna be in for some real shit for a few years ahead - and sure as hell that came to pass.
Bush then receded into the Whitehouse to become a state secret, locked the doors and became a closet politician with declining popularity till 9/11. The rest is history.
