I wouldn't count out his chances for success entirely, but it does seem a less likely target audience than most. Even with all these posts, there might be some nimrod who says "well, but maybe it works, it's only $6" and gives it a go. When they see their virtual balance at $9.35 next week, they'll think, "hey, it works, if I put in a couple hundred bucks, I could really speed things up!", and so on.
My guess is that this isn't even a pyramid or Ponzi scheme, as those would entail returning some actual money...my bet is that this is just a flat-out take-your-money scheme. Or maybe he's phishing for identity info as well.
