My credit card kept maxing out right before payment date and I got to the point of three notices one month before noticed it in my junk folder and still, never was shut down.
Just sounds to me like miscommunication. This is why it's very important for both parties in textual conversations to clearly state their intentions and/or instructions as plain as possible. Nobody is really in the worng here, just lack of detailed instructions as to how the server was to be handled/shutdown. As obvious as it sounds when shutting down equipment with hard drives, it's still best to sound like an idiot when asking for specific ways to handle the situation.
Mind you, a root pass should have been obtained to shut down properly. it;s just commons ense to shut down servers properly. Just killing power to a 'nix box is like sticking your hand in a garborator(sp?) and fliping random switches on the wall above your kitchen sink, something aweful is bound to happen.
