My ex-in laws used to go to Europe in August. Granted, it's hotter than hell, but they were able to stay in five star hotels, eat at very fine restaurants and see the cities they were visiting....and not break the bank.

I guess much depends on your requirements for travel..hostels are cool if you're into backpacking and five star hotels are awesome if you're like me and love luxury.
