Mika,
I started with heavy metal (about 1980).
I learned to play guitar.
I heard Ynwie Malmsteen.
That turned me on to classical music.
Then i heard Al dimeola, an amazing virtuso jazz-fusion guitar player and that turned me onto
jazz.
Went I went to college, I had a friend that really liked classic rock. Started smoking a lotta weed and all of a sudden I like Pink Floyd, the Beatles, etc.
Ater college, I started going out to clubs. Hated techno at first but it grew on me and then one day I found myself liking it.
I would like a rap song every once in a while (Dre was the first rap CD I bought) and finally over the last few years, well, now I really dig it.
As a musician, one that was voted best at his instrument in a fair-sized city, I could come from a certain point of view and say all pop music is shit because it is simplistic. But then, I would probably end up only liking classical music because it is the most challenging to write, play ,etc. I mean, how many people do you know that can compose a concerto or a fugue? It takes a lot more practice to play a Chopin piece than a Metallica song. But who cares? I think that's the wrong approach. All kinds of music have validity to someone. The complexity of the arrangement doesn't make one form of music better than another.
