Question: What is the difference between the AR-15 and the M-16?

Long Answers: The AR-15 was originally created by ArmaLite. When the US military adopted the gun, it was designated the M16 rifle (the M14 and M15 being in service already, this was the next logical step in the designations). So basically the AR-15 and M16 and the variants of the two are all actually AR-15 rifles.

That said, some AR-15 rifles are selective fire and others are semi-auto only. All of the M16 series rifles are selective fire. So many people assume that the AR-15 is the semiauto variant of the gun and the M16, the selective fire. This is generally a safe bet -- but not always. In fact the very first AR-15s made were selective fire and some semiauto AR-15s have been legally converted into selective fire.
