New way of drug dealing?

FARMINGTON -- A local parent flipping through a child?s cell phone last week led to the arrest Friday of six teens -- three from Farmington and three from Massachusetts -- who were using the latest technology to market marijuana throughout town.

According to police, local teens would call kids in Shrewsbury, Mass., to arrange for a sale. The Massachusetts teens would then take pictures their merchandise and send a text message with the photo back.

"They would e-mail a picture of the drugs and a message to kids in town on their cell phone," Sgt. Daniel Devine said, "and then the kids in Farmington would send the photo and message to all their friends to notify them of the upcoming sale."

The scheme broke down when a parent happened to be flipping through their teen's cell phone and found the message advertising the next sale. That's when the parent then notified authorities.

"We obtained warrants to monitor the cell phones and were able to narrow down a few locations where the sale could take place. Through surveillance, detectives and patrol officers were able to locate the teens as the sale was taking place." Devine said.

Six teens were arrested on Friday around 9:30 p.m. They had less than a pound of marijuana, several hundred dollars, drug paraphernalia and cell phones in the car, all of which were seized by the police.
