I can point you to some excellent Public Defenders. As a matter of fact there is a Federal PD in San Francisco that is also a professor at Hasting Law School. So your allusion to PD's being somehow worth less than a hired gun do not hold water with me.

Agreed on this. The majority of the best criminal defense lawyers in Florida are all ex-PDs and ex-State Attorneys. The Federal Public Defenders are usually some of the better State level Public Defenders that jump to the Federal system. It's a bit demoralizing on the Federal level though, as the rules of discovery combined with massive mandatory minimum sentences make it so that there are few trials. Usually the Feds flip the defendants like pancakes, making them rat out anyone and everyone in the hopes of escaping a life in prison.
If my life was hanging on the line, I would probably not want a Public Defender, but only because I would want someone that could devote a huge amount of time on my case. Time committment is a luxury that few PDs have.
