Hmm...never thought about it. I would guess it is just being captured with either the NTSC or PAL codec (at a data rate of 3.6Mb/Sec).
It is when you export it using a different format (codec) that you would apply an extension (.mov, etc). If you were exporting back to a camera it would remain NTSC with no extension.
Typically I export as Quicktime, and then use Cleaner to batch process the video into whatever format and data rates that are required (i.e., WMV at 100Kb and 300Kb, MPEG at 100Kb and 300Kb).
