The Sopranos is a very well-written show that doesn't just rely on the novelty of 'gangsters have real families too' angle but on personality interplay and mixing in funny dialogue. Example: Junior's recollection of the days he used to collect devotional saint and religious cards and his comparison to baseball cards. "Thousands for Honus Wagner. Jack shit for Jesus." While the dialogue is funny it also has deeper subtexts between gangsters' apparent piety and their more 'base' economic instincts and the conflict between these two. Interwoven with Italian-American culture, as well.
The Sopranos is one of those TV shows that are worth seeing over and over again. So good I bought the 5 season DVD box set.

A lot of people don't like the show nearly as much as they used to. The first three seasons started out as dark comedies. The fourth and fifth season moved more toward melodrama with a lot more feeling and more complicated relationships.
Brilliant show and I've always loved it.
