Port Orange, FL (AHN) ? A man who woke up to discover his head was bleeding drove to work and left a note for his boss explaining he was on his way to the hospital. Upon arriving there, he found the cause of the bleeding: a bullet wedged in his brain.

When authorities later contacted his girlfriend, she shot herself.

Glen Thomas Betterley, 53, noticed the blood Thursday morning and asked Emma Lorene Larsen, 65, if she had hit him. She responded no.

He cleaned himself off and went back to sleep, but when the bleeding would not stop he drove to work, left the note, and made his way to the Hallifax Medical Center emergency room, where he was told he had been shot in the forehead.

On Friday, he was listed in stable condition.

As Betterley was being treated, police called Larsen and heard a single gunshot on the other end of the phone line. Arriving at the home, they discovered she was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Dr. Jonathan Greenberg, neurosurgeon at Orlando Regional Medical Center, says such a case is not uncommon, "I've had patients with knives in their heads, screwdrivers in their heads, lawn darts, small-caliber gunshot wounds to the head, where patients have been awake and talking. The question is how important is the area that is damaged?"
