Actually that wasn't his excuse. He said he was a proud fascist who admired Mussolini but was not a racist.

"I give the salute because it is from a 'camerata' to 'camerati'," he added, using the Italian words for members of late dictator Benito Mussolini's movement.

"The salute is aimed at my people. With the straight arm I don't want to incite violence and certainly not racial hatred," he said.

To me he seems like a Nationalist who is far-right, but I don't think it is anymore extreme than that. Plenty of Communist inclined people in the media, entertainment and sport in any event. He did not do anything particularly wrong, and it was not a 'Hitler salute'. If members of European parliament can sing 'The Internationale' Communist anthem without any rammifications why can a soccer player not make a fascist salute. You don't have to agree with him, but he was well within his right to do it, and you do have to understand Hitler was not the inventor of Fascist politics.
