If by being a nice guy you mean opening doors, saying thanks, and what not...then I guess I'm a "nice guy". At one point it did seem like I was being taken advantage of and I considered being a dick, but I never did.
I still do nice things for girls, and they appreciate it. Take a stand when you have to, but there's no point in constantly trying to prove your thoughts & opinions are more important than hers. I personally don't believe nice guys finish last. Sadly, it's more common that ugly guys finish last.
Be courteous yet intelligent, assertive but not overbearing, and lastly...confident.
Better yet, be yourself.
