I dont think that the level of musicianship has dropped, but I do believe that what has to be put down on a cd is a music that is a lot simpler and less demanding for a very watered down listener.
Do you really believe that the quality of playing on the top 40 albums today is the same level of playing as you found 10 20 or 30 years ago.
I think that one of the main reasons for this is the obvious transition from radio to video - the singer and the personallity has taken over from the musician and the technique or talent.
Really really good playing - awe inspiring, spine chilling guitar work - has disappeared from popular music, but I do believe that people want to hear it.
Great music will always survive - In Toronto here, Bruce Springsteen tickets sold out in 30 minutes - no advertising campaign, nothing on mtv about it - just good music getting the respect it deserves.
