hence, subconcious self-manipulation of frame-of-mind. He's doing it to himself, yet there's nothing immediate that he can do about it to fix it. His "knowing" of the facts is causing his outward life to be an endless train of bad luck, yet it is completely self-generated and contained..... he can indeed correct this and eliminate the bad luck, but only by either correcting the physical issue that is plaguing his subconcious, or by a realization/awareness of the subconscious processes at work on him.
