10 million transactions isn't that heavy. That's only a bit over 100 transactions per second. We do that on a couple of our databases....not the affiliate program unfortunately (yet!). My guess is GFY does that or more, probably ALOT more if the ads are being served out of the same database as the board.

I've managed to squeeze 120-150 transactions per second out of a single P4 2.2 Ghz box with FreeBSD and Mysql. That requires some tuning of both the database and the SQL the application is sending though. Slow transactions will kill you at that level. And mysql tends not to spiral but rather just hits the wall hard and doesn't recover until volume subsides.

Mysql is pretty powerful and can tote a load. I dont know if they still do, but Yahoo ran under Mysql for a long long time.

Unless you've got a long term budget, I wouldn't go Oracle, not only do the costs of the software and hardware kill you, but you really need a DBA on staff or at least on call 24/7. And smart money has two of 'em.....in case one gets sick or quits.
