Depends where you live. Heres a good resource to check the various operators coverage in your area: http://www.deadcellzones.com/

I tend to stick with providers that use GSM (cingular, suncom and some others) and only buy unlocked GSM phones. That way if you change providers because their service sucks you dont have to buy a new phone (unless you go with sprint or alltell). GSM is also the world standard, so if you do any traveling outside the US (I'm assuming your in the US) you should be able to use your phone (I think all you have to do is change the SIM card, but i'm not 100% positive on that). More operators use GSM so your options are greater with an unlocked GSM phone.

CDMA networks like sprint and alltell generally have crappy coverage in my exerpience, and your choice of phones is limited compared to GSM.
