There is also the issue of traffic generation. I know I've fallen into the trap of thinking of traffic in terms of clicks, when, in reality, they are real people....so filtering is essential...know thy traffic is a key ingredient when pre selling a sponsor site. For some, ugly galleries and free sites works great. For others, they want elegant and clean.
I am by no means an expert, although I've been around long enough to know what doesn't work for my traffic....the trick is finding out what does work and then concentrating on that. There is much in the way of experimentation....not many understand the notion that what we do is unlike any other. We cannot see our traffic.
There are some truisms; but, ain't nuthin' carved in stone....
