A little advice if you don't mind:
1) Just take to the full blame. Don't qualify your position with holes in responsibility, it will get you further in the end. You work for AVN, step up to the plate and resolve the issue. It is not your responsibility but it is your opportunity to prove yourself: Seize it. Don't tell them about your background, tell them what you are capable of doing.
2) Never give an option to let webmasters out of mailings before you attempt to apologize and resolve. You want more webmasters, not less. AVN made a mistake, it happens, just apologize, move forward and salvage the accounts. Don't worry about who is complaining.
I have been a punching bag on more than a few occasions in this industry in terms of PR. Sometimes you just have to chalk it up as your job.
