I don't recall whether this took place during WWI or WWII, but I remember watching a film about a bunch of returning soldiers, out of work and poor, many of them well armed, who took it upon themselves to march on Washington DC and demand better treatment and government assistance; if memory serves this led to the origin (or expansion of) the GI Bill which included better medical benefits for veterans and affordable home loans.
I wonder if today's generation of returning military will demonstrate the courage and tenacity of their grandparents generation.
