If most of the .EU domains end up the hands of a relatively few speculators, the overall value of .EU will be greatly deminished - it's already happened before, such as with .INFO.

If .EU gets a bad rep similar to some other TLDs, which I expect will be the case, that saves many folks who already have domain names in other TLDs the hassle and money of having to register .EU domains at all - most average folks will tend to refrain from visiting .EU domains if it's basically perceived as one huge parking wasteland.
