Just back from watching Narnia
I have to say that I wasn't all too excited to go see it but my friend really wanted to go so I went with him. I was put off by the talk of heavy Christian overtones. For some reason I was the only girl at school that didn't read the books so while I knew a bit about it I was coming at it pretty fresh.
It was certainly a kids movie and was clearly aiming at being 'LOTR-Lite'. That said, I enjoyed it and most of the kids in the audience when I saw it were six and under and none of them cried through it so it must have been working for them too.
While the story isn't at all the same I found myself thinking that this was this generation's Neverending Story. It felt a lot like that in the way it was brought to the screen and the kids trapped in a mystery land thing.
At times the word 'twee' kept popping into my head and some of the cgi was a bit ropey but it wasn't overwhelming and again it is more obviously for kids than some of the other cross over movies out of late.
The Christian tones didn't hit strongly until the last half of the movie but when it did it really did. I said to my friend that if I was God I would sue for plagiarism. All that said, I was only wise to that because I was older and knew the bible story.
I would give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5 from an adult perspective but I am sure younger eyes would have given it higher.
