The water in the radiator isn't the biggest concern - it's the water in your engine block.

The block has freeze plugs in it that are supposed to be pushed out when the ice expands in the block (as opposed to swelling and cracking the engine block) so hopefully if it got cold enough they worked like they were supposed to.

Starting the engine with frozen water in the block isn't something you want to do and you can be misled by thinking cause the water is the radiator is melted the ice in the engine is too....

Call that mechanic and tell him about his screw up - have him tow the vecicle to his shop to warm up the engine block and put antifreeze in it once it's warmed up and running again.

Be sure to tell him to check the freeze plugs too!
