This is exactly right.
And does it matter? Between the 16th and 18th centuries in Europe there were constant wars between nations some gaining terriroty at some points and losing at others.
I'm reading
The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy right now. It's absolutely incredible how much fighting was going on in the pursuit of economic, national, and religious power and domination. I guess it's never really ended from the Habsburgs, to Napoleon, to Hitler in the 20th century.
I think of the Netherlands as a happy place full of pot smokers. Back then they were involved in so much war, lol.
