Your diaphragm muscle jerks and you suck in air quickly, the air flows causes the flap to your windpipe to abruptly snap shut..this is what is going on inside your body when you hiccup.

Breath slowly and methodically or try holding your breath for as long as you can. It's hard for our brain to send the message to the diaphragm to quit this once it starts.
