This is true. Most of them create tmp directories on your HD and store the shit there. Notice when you view a movie online and then download it the download is almost instant?

The best thing to do is run a system search and use a wildcard...i.e...*.tmp (especially if you use Photoshop on a regular basis). I once had a Photoshop .tmp file that was 2.9 gigs.
