In AZ you just mainly have to worry about your car. We're #1 in the country for auto theft.
Also while I was living in Tucson (the arm pit of America), back in 1999 - 2000, it was also the #2 city for traffic accidents. Drivers out there don't know how to drive worth a shit!

And you have to figure that California is a hell of a lot bigger, so yes there will be more crime than there would be if you were to be in Arizona. The more of a population you have, the more crime you will encounter. Well that statement is true for the USA at the least.

The cost of living I hear you on. When I was living in Huntington Beach, before I moved up to buttfuck nowhere Oregon. I was paying $1600/month for what I would pay maybe $900 or maybe even $800 for in Tucson. But still being a mile away from the beach was worth it.
