'Free' in this context means that you don't have to pay cash to install or use the script. If your site grows then yes, in the long run, it is cheaper to buy the script outright. Slothtrader lets you start out with $0 outlay and then move up to a paid version when you're sure it's worth it.

What happens if you spend $200 on a trading script and then realise it doesn't do what you want it to? Or that it's buggy?

Think of the 1% thing as an extended, unlimited time trial, with the only difference being that it redirects 1% of clicks on your site.
