I had gone to Australia when I was in high school. If my memory is correct, it is a paste that is made from the leftover yeast from the making of beer. Basically, it's the brown sludge at the bottom of the beer barrel, processed for you to slap on bread, crackers or whatnot. I also remember that it tastes like earwax.
