the quote u posted 'they probably had an erect posture for walking' is the guy giving a probable reason why they had an erect posture (for walking). but they did in fact have an erect posture. you are reading the sentance as
'they probably had an erect posture for walking'
read it as 'they probably had an erect posture for walking'.
