They were originally so that people could tell whose phone was ringing. Mine has an actual ring and it stands out now because it isn't something strange.

mmm I can use mp3s on mine, no need to pay...I just upload it to the phone with a usb cable...
I don't 'like' it...its not a priority...its just an option, and I chose to use it...
If someone wants to use the default ringtones, good for them...I just don't think its a good answer to the question you asked LOL but that's just my opinion...
