I'd personally prefer one of Cuba's smaller islands like Cayo Coco or Cayo Largo. Both gorgeous and more private, less families and such. BUT, if your inquiry involves American friends as well, that kind of eliminates Cuba.

EDIT: Cayo Coco has direct flights from Toronto btw
