The reason they did not go all the way before is because they knew what would happen if they did remove Saddam.

You would have all the other crazy despots taking over. At least when it is just Saddam he crushes all opposition and keeps the Muslim extremists under control. I find it ironic that people put Saddam in the same league as Osama, when the last thing Saddam wants in his country is extremism taking root in his country the same way it did in Iran.

You got the Kurds in the north and the Shiite Muslims in the south. And they both want power. Not too mention the other assorted crazies that would love to take over. At least in the last 10 years Iraq has been stable and we kept them caged in... right where we wanted him.

And despite all the sactions that were meant to make the people mad enough to overthrow him, it never worked. Instead the country starved to death.

They will take him out... but what then?
