About a month ago I was out to dinner, and my date saw a hair on her plate. I immediately called over the waiter and he took back both our plates to the kitchen. A few minutes later the restaurant manager came out to our table and apologized.
The hair --- turned out to be a hair from the brush they use to brush the steaks with sauce. He said there were making us both up new dinners (we had both ordered steak + lobster), and he offered us free desserts.
That place made the effort to make things right with us. I like eating in places that have a sense of customer satisfaction.
Always tell them about any problem with your meal, if only to see how they handle it and how they treat you. Anyone can make a mistake and inadvertently drop a hair on a plate... it is in how they handle it once you complain that tells you weather or not to go back there again.
