yes, you can switch the sim card to another phone.... BUT, the phone itself still has a UIN which is transfered to the switch when you make a call, the switch then determines if the phone is a valid and open acct and then either lets the call through or gives a error message.
the sim card simply holds your personal info. (numbers, photos, ring tones and such)
btw, I used to work on the intranet for AT&T wireless (now cingular), you know the one the tech support reps use to give you craptastic customer service
