I don't think i've ever heard Google say, "Don't send me so many pages".
The problem isn't quantity, it's quality. Quality has taken the backseat to keyword rich crap that offers the end user no value.
You can win the SEO game if you have 100,000 pages that are useful and relevant to the end user.
