TDF, there is a No Update patch you can put on your Memory Disk that eliminates the need to update. I needed it so I didn't lose my emulators. If you need help finding it let me know.
About the GTA on PSP, I just picked it up today, and played with it for about 30 minutes. Everything I've seen so far is great. I do agree the controls take a few to get used to however.
