I never knew that bit of history.
What is now the US seems to have a habit of fucking people about - they did the same in the 1850's with William Walker in Central America.
The object was to enslave the people of Latin America and have the land as part of the Southern Confederacy. He was eventually booted out as well. (Na.. think he was killed someplace and his forces sent back home).
Old habits die hard.
