Last time I checked the US Treasury stats on debt don't include the "additional responsibilities" such as Social Security, Medicare, and various other debts that aren't allocated for. These additional responsibilities are over $38 Trillion, but aren't included when people quote debt figures, which tends to hide the much more scary reality.

Simply looking at public debt figures doesn't give the whole picture on a government's liabilities.
