I've been using an old Palm T2 for audio and video when traveling.
I load up 3-4 tv shows and 2-3 movies + an audio book and a bunch of songs before getting on a plane. The battery lasts about 5 hours, so it's good through most of the flights I take.
If I was going to switch, I think that I'd get a PSP. You can load up movies and music on a memory card and play psp games.
The only drawback to both is the storage size. 1GB memory cards are about normal for both. However, that has never been an issue for me as there as always been more entertainment then flight length.
